Hi, I’m Tony!

As the founder and operator of Wintergreen Guiding, I’m glad you’re here and interested in exploring the UP! I grew up here and I’ve spent my life exploring these forests and shores both personally and professionally. My background is in education and leadership, having worked in both K-12 schools and universities as well as the head guide at the Huron Mountain Club. These experiences are what allow me to effectively plan trips, teach the knowledge and skills of the outdoors, and make sure everyone has a great day outside.

To me, a guided trip isn't about getting from Point A to Point B, it’s about the stories told in between. Whether we’re discussing the history of Marquette, the geology at Presque Isle, or navigating the meandering hillsides of the Yellow Dog River, my goal is to provide a seamless, safe, and immersive experience.

I believe that the best views are earned, but the best stories are shared. When you step onto the trail with me, you aren't just a client, you’re an explorer gaining access to the true, untamed spirit of Marquette County.

What I Bring to Every trip:

  • Safety First: Expert navigation and advanced wilderness readiness for all UP conditions. I plan conservatively, monitor weather, and carry navigation devices, communication tools, and first aid kits.

  • Local Lore: A deep library of knowledge covering local history, geology, and ecology. I am passionate about this place and love sharing what I know and learning from others.

  • Atypical Locations: Access to off-the-beaten-path locations that standard maps leave behind. I make sure you get to experience the real wild UP.

  • Pace-Adjusted Planning: Every route is calibrated to your group, ensuring the challenge is rewarding, never overwhelming. I take care of the trip so you don’t have to.

  • Leave-No-Trace principles. We will maintain a low impact and practice respect for the landscape. I ensure every location is ready for the next group, being present and moving mindfully through the environment with each trip.

Why book a trip with a guide?

Elevating your Upper Peninsula experience from a simple walk to a world-class expedition.

Most people visit Marquette and see the scenery. My guests experience it. When you book a trip with Wintergreen Guiding, you aren’t just hiring someone to pace you, you’re securing a premium, worry-free adventure designed around three core pillars:

Safety & Peace of Mind

The rugged terrain of the U.P. can be unpredictable. I handle all the logistics including navigation, emergency communication, and first-aid readiness so you can focus entirely on the horizon. From managing technical scrambles at Sugarloaf to navigating the Yellow Dog River waterway, your safety is my professional priority.

Exclusive Local Intel

Avoid the tourist traps and crowded trailheads. I take you to the lesser-known spots, the extra overlooks, and the quietest old-growth groves that don't show up on standard maps. You get the local’s version of Marquette and the surrounding areas, the one usually reserved for those who have spent a lifetime exploring these woods.

Deep Interpretive Storytelling

A trail is more than just dirt and rock. I provide a deep dive into the billion-year-old geology of the Canadian Shield, the maritime and terrestrial legends of Lake Superior, and the unique ecology of the mixed forests of Upper Michigan. You’ll leave the trail not just tired, but truly connected to the history of the North Woods.
